Tony Barnhart, Mr. College Football

Tony is set to begin his 47th season of covering college football for radio, TV and the internet. He is currently a college football analyst for The SEC Network and a columnist for TMGcollegesports.com. Previously he was a college football analyst for CBS Sports and a reporter for ESPN’s College Game Day. He spent 25 years at The Atlanta-Journal Constitution as a college football writer and has authored five books on college football. Two of the books are the autobiographies of Vince Dooley and Larry Munson.

Tony is a 1976 graduate of the Henry W. Grady School of Journalism at the University of Georgia. In 2016 was inducted into the school’s Grady Fellowship, signifying career achievement and contributions to Journalism. In 2009, Tony received the Bert McGrane Award (Football Writers Association of America – included in the College Football Hall of Fame). In 2016, he received the Contribution to Amateur Football Award from the National Football Foundation. In 1999 Tony was named the Georgia Sports Writer of the Year. On May 22, 2021 Tony was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.

Tony and his wife, Maria, will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary on Aug. 14. Maria is retired and spends time enjoying her grandchildren and volunteering in the Dunwoody community. Their daughter (Sara) is a “Double Dawg” with both undergraduate and law school degrees from Georgia. Their son-in-law, Brian, is a proud graduate of Michigan State. Tony and Maria have two grandchildren ages 9 and 2.
