Columbus Street Hockey (CSH) was Foundedin 2022 to help lower the two most prominent barriers to entry for hockey: access and cost. Many people in Columbus cannot either afford or have the means to get to the local ice rink. We started a street hockey program to address those two barriers. Street hockey requires only a stick and a ball and can be played on any relatively flat surface, bringing hockey to kids of all socio-demographic backgrounds and communities. The pop-ups were free for any child who wanted to participate having routinely between 40-60 kids at all events.
The Rotary club sponsored the food celebration at the end of each 6 week competition matches. 2 in all this Rotary year. We celebrated the winners, and connected with the parents as well as the young people. We had a Rotary tent with signage and spoke about who and what is Rotary. We also gave some local venders an opportunity to help provide food. Any food left over was taken to the Fire department on site.
