Helping Maui
RCD Mobilizes Local Businesses to Aid Lahaina, Maui Fire Victims

Our club has taken swift action to support the victims of the recent fire tragedy in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii. Throughout the upcoming month of September 2023, the Rotary Club has enlisted the support of Dunwoody's vibrant culinary and retail community to raise funds for those affected by the catastrophic event.

In a display of unity and compassion, the Rotary Club of Dunwoody has launched a collaborative initiative that reflects the community's shared commitment to extending a helping hand. Participating restaurants are pledging their dedication by contributing a portion of the proceeds from selected menu items. Simultaneously, local retail businesses will prominently feature donation boxes to encourage contributions from patrons. Read on for a list of restaurants and businesses - and share this information with your family and friends so that we can provide strong support for Maui.  [read more]

New Student, Fellowship Opportunity
Welcome GRSP Student Ahmed!

Welcome to Dunwoody's new GRSP student - Ahmed Sendze from Gabon. Ahmed will be pursuing a degree in psychology from Oglethorpe University - and will be living with his sister in Sandy Springs. He is the Georgia Rotary Student Program's first student ever from Gabon, and comes to us through our relationship with Oglethorpe's admissions office. Ahmed's first year of study at Oglethorpe will be as a GRSP student - with a $13,000 scholarship funded half by Dunwoody Rotary and half by GRSP. He will be joining the clubs for meetings and projects, and the other 41 students of the GRSP class of 2023-24 in a variety of weekend activities, including our own leadership weekend in February. Ahmed will speak to the club in late October.

In the meantime, we are reviving a tradition - a barbecue at the home of Bill and Les Woulfin to welcome our student. Mark your calendars now for this event - Sunday October 1 from 3-7 pm. Everyone is invited for this Family of Rotary event.

The Woulfins will provide the entree and the club provides wine, beer and sodas. We are asking that each of you provide an appetizer, salad, side dish or dessert to share (enough to serve 8 people).

If you plan on attending, please let Griff know with an email to griffransom@bellsouth.net by September 14. In that email, let us know:

  • how many people will be attending
  • what you'll be bringing to share

Whiskey Raffle Update
Don't Forget About Whiskey

HAVE YOU DECIDED WHAT SPECIAL WHISKEY MIGHT BE THE SPECIAL ONE THAT HELPS THE CLUB RAISE $10,000 IN SUPPORT OF OUR CHARITABLE WORK FOR THIS YEAR? THANKS TO THOSE WHO HAVE AS WE LAUNCH OUR THIRD ANNUAL WHISKEY RAFFLE. ALL WE NEED IS THE RIGHT BLEND OF WHISKEYS AND GENEROUS WHISKEY ENTHUSIASTS TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN.

How can you help?  Right now, we're focused on the first part of the blend - fine in-demand whiskey donations. Visit your local liquor store TODAY and asking for a donation. After a few years of doing the raffle we've learned that the unusual or rare bottle generates more ticket sales. Some in-demand whiskeys include: Stag, Penelope, Parker's Whistle Pig and Blantons.  Need more ideas:  https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2023/08/the-american-whiskey-masters-2023-results/

Drawings will be held at each Thirsty Thursday in the months of October, November and December.  So it is critical that we have our whiskeys lined up by the end of the month.  Don't delay.

Save the Date to Serve
Keep a Long-Time Dunwoody Tradition Going: Sign Up for Our Sept. 21 USO Tour of Duty

You can enlist today for our upcoming day at the USO on September 21. You'll be upholding a long-time Dunwoody tradition. We need:

  • Eight volunteers to help welcome and serve lunch to any active troops and veterans passing through Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on September 21 from 10 am - 3 pm, and
  • Any and all bakers who would like to contribute home cooked cookies and brownies to go with that lunch.

Cookies should be delivered to the E. 48th Street Market on 09/18 & 19th, 2023. All home baked cookies will be bagged on volunteer day and each bag will have a label that reads  "Dear Soldier, Thank you for your service. Enjoy this small token of appreciation made especially for you with love and prayers." Rotary Club of Dunwoody

Please contact Charlie Augello (italian@e48thstreetmarket.com) to volunteer or bake cookies.

We look forward to another very rewarding day that Rotarians demonstrate “Service above Self"
