Take Time for Thirsty Thursday at Porter Brew & Que ... and Remind Your Friends about Our Whiskey and Cigar Raffle

Join us this Thursday night at Porter Brew & Que for fun and fellowship - and a special guest appearance by GABO, who will share the art of hand rolling cigars like those featured in our Exclusive Whiskey and Cigar Pairing raffles. Porter Brew & Que has been a big supporter of this fundraising effort too - so come and say thank you!

Festivities begin at 5:30 pm. Bring a friend - and between now and then, share the raffle graphic with anyone you know who might be interested in whiskey and cigars - for themselves or as a holiday gift, and get your tickets. Watch your email and social media - or go to whiskey-raffle.com for more updates on the raffle!

Service Opportunities
Helping the Dunwoody Nature Center with Restoring Old Growth Forest

The Dunwoody Nature Center was awarded a grant last year to restore the old growth Piedmont forest on its grounds, and the Forest Steward program is an outgrowth of that plan. Last Saturday Rick Otness and Tina Philpot assisted Cathie Brumfield, a newly trained DNC Forest Steward, in removing invasives and small trees from the meadow below the North Woods Pavilion. We had a great time on a gorgeous fall day, and we laid the groundwork for a beautiful spring forest view from the Pavilion balcony.

There will be more Saturday opportunities to participate in this project - watch the bulletin or contact Cathie if you'd like to help.

37th Annual Holiday Luncheon - Friday, December 10

You and a guest are invited to join the Dunwoody Family of Rotary on Friday, December 10 at the Dunwoody Country Club for our annual gala luncheon. Festivities begin at 11:00 - where you can catch up with friends - and we can continue conversation as we take our seats at 11:30 and enjoy lunch. At noon, we'll start the program - including a very special tribute to PDG Bill Mulkey and his family, presentation of some awards and a brief appearance by the Marine Corps as we make our donation to Toys for Tots. So plan on coming and don't forget to bring an unwrapped toy.

RSVP by November 29 to rcdsecr@gmail.com.

Do You Believe in Magic? Join Us Saturday December 4 for a Dunwoody Tradition

Do you remember the childhood story of Rapunzel, locked in a room and tasked with turning straw into gold? We have a similar opportunity  Saturday, December 4 at 9 AM when we meet to transform about 1,000 books into magical holiday gifts for the students of Dresden and Kingsley Elementary Schools.

There will be no locks – just coffee, yummy breakfast foods and lots of fellowship – all at President Carter Stout’s offices, 4675 N. Shallowford Road, Suite 200, Atlanta, GA 30338. Our work to add bookplates and Spanish/English dictionary cards will be done in no time at all! This is far from the first time that Dunwoody Rotarians have been asked – and actually willingly volunteered to perform this magical task.

We have donated a book for every child at Dresden for more than 20 years – and added Kingsley to the program in 2017. Since we started, we have distributed more than 20,000 books. A big shout out to Roy Ethridge and Jennie Springer for getting us started, and to Anita Augello for encouraging us to expand to Kingsley. So join us for the magic this Saturday. And let Kathy Brandt or Jack Sparks know you’re coming, so we’re sure to have plenty of treats!

Calling All Host Families for GRSP Leadership Weekend

We are still in need four or five host families for the January 14-16 GRSP Leadership Weekend. This entails bed, breakfast and a bit of transportation between Friday night and Sunday morning. In exchange, you have a great opportunity to meet some special young people of the world here this year for a GRSP scholarship - and enjoy fellowship with other host families and students at Saturday evening dinners. Contact Jackie Cuthbert if you about hosting - and Ron Barden if you'd like to hear about other ways you can help with the leadership weekend.

Service Opportunity
You Be the Judge - 2022 Georgia Laws of Life Essay Contest

The Georgia Laws of Life Essay contest is coming up this winter/spring, with thousands of essays from high school students around the state. Our club has been a long-time and enthusiastic contest sponsor - we have provided prize money, served on the Board and judged essays since Dunwoody Rotarian George Stewart was at the center of this Georgia Rotary initiative. As a sponsor, we have the opportunity to judge the contest - in a window that starts mid-February and runs through April 1. You can be a school judge, a state judge, or both.  Judging - and training to be a judge - all takes place online, and takes a few hours of your time.

Sign up at Laws of Life.

Our Rotary Foundation at Work
Dunwoody Joins Brazilian Global Grant Focused on Downs Syndrome

This week, the Rotary Club of Dunwoody has joined with Alpharetta and other District 6900 Rotary Clubs for a Global Grant project to provide training and equipment for special needs persons in Brazil - adding $2,000 in funding for this project. This  Basic Education and Learning (BEL) program will deliver certification training to qualified enrollees to foster and improve reading, writing, and speaking skills for Down preschoolers and youth. Over 25 months, four supervisors and ten grad students will train ten dedicated and qualified individuals. An estimated 176 Down persons will receive intensive instruction during this process. After the curriculum is complete, program graduates will be certified to continue special needs training in the Pelotas community of Brazil.

Alpharetta Rotarians are in Brazil this week as the project gets underway.

Dunwoody has a long history of participating in Global Grant projects. Earlier this year, we partnered with Laura Kann's Illinois district to eradicate mosquitos on an island in Puerto Rico.
