Get Your Calendars Ready ... and Be Ready to Serve

Dunwoody Rotarians,

I am fired up about making a difference and having fun while we're doing it. Our hybrid Rotary meetings - in person and by Zoom - are working well; thanks to Griff Ransom and others for working on the technology to make that happen. Our speakers have been great - thanks to Kathy Brandt for that!

Last week we had a great Thirsty Thursday gathering at Cathie Brumfield's home - and we're planning to gather there again next month - on November 19 - this time with a cozy fire in the firepit. And we have plans underway for our holiday luncheon on December 11 at the Dunwoody Country Club. 

But I'm just as excited about our upcoming service opportunities. As most of you know, the Community Assistance Center does an amazing job of providing emergency services and food to people in the Sandy Springs and Dunwoody communities. Our speaker a few weeks ago shared a lot of statistics about who they're helping and the services they provide. We have identified an opportunity to help by volunteering one Saturday a month  in their food pantry - starting November 7,

We also have opportunities for in person service on October 31 at Bounds Garden and on November 14 at the Dunwoody Nature Center. And we have an opportunity to participate in an Electronics Recycling event sponsored by two of our DeKalb Rotary Council clubs on November 7, and to help with turkeys and Harvest Baskets for Kingsley Elementary and the annual Toys for Tots Drive.

Service Opportunity
Start Your Halloween Trick or Treat Early at Bounds Garden

Join Ranger Fred Bounds and the Bounds Garden crew at 9:00 am on Halloween morning to make sure this traffic island is dressed up well. And who knows, there might even be treats involved - at the very least some time with your fellow Rotarian gardeners! 

New Opportunity to Serve
Join the RCD Community Assistance Center Support Team

A few weeks ago, we heard from the Community Assistance Center (CAC) that serves families in need in Sandy Springs and Dunwoody. Since then, we have been working to identify a project with CAC. For the next three months, we have committed to bringing a team of eight volunteers on the first Saturday of November, December and January to help cleaning, processing donations that come in and stocking shelves in the food pantry.

Our first group volunteer activity will be Saturday, November 7 from 9:00 am - 12 noon at CAC's Sandy Springs facility. Anyone who is interested may come for required training. If you have children who are at least 15 years old, you are welcome to bring them too. Have Old Electronics You'd Like to Recycle?

Two of our DeKalb Rotary Council partners - the Rotary Clubs of Tucker and Stone Mountain - will hold an Electronics and HME (home medical equipment) Recycling Day on Saturday, November 7, 2020, at Handy Hardware, 3969 Lawrenceville Highway (Town Square Center) in Tucker, Georgia. The proceeds will benefit FODAC (Friends of Disabled Adults and Children). This is not the first time we have supported FODAC - and it's a great way to get rid of old electronics or gently used HME.

Working and non-working electronics (with the exception of CRT monitors and televisions) and gently used HME, such as wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, commode chairs and shower benches, will be accepted for recycling at no charge, but participants are encouraged to make a donation to FODAC. Funds and equipment collected from the event will support FODAC’s main program supplying HME to the mobility impaired and their caregivers, at little or no cost to the recipients.

Is It All About the Oatmeal?

The simple answer - NO! It's all about making Thanksgiving better for 80 Kingsley Elementary families who can use our help. This week, our Board approved a $2,500 Charitable Fund donation to purchase turkeys for the harvest baskets that will be distributed just before Thanksgiving.

Anita Augello and her daughter Claudia Augello Smith are leading the Harvest Basket effort as they have for several years. Beyond Thanksgiving dinner, their goal is to fill the basket with sustainable, nourishing products. They have reached out to the local community for donations - and have asked if we could collect boxes of oatmeal - regular or instant. If you can help, bring a box or two of oatmeal to our November 6 or November 13 meeting at the Dunwoody Country Club or drop your contributions off at the East 48th Street Market by November 13. The overall goal is to have 160 boxes of oatmeal.

Save the Date - Saturday, November 14 at the Dunwoody Nature Center

Plan to join us Saturday, November 14 from 9:00 AM to noon at the Dunwoody Nature Center. We need all the volunteers we can get to help with projects on the property - and your support can help us increase the impact we will have on the Dunwoody Nature Center. The activities involve proper social distancing, but allow volunteers to be close enough to share encouragement and humor. 

Go to the Dunwoody Nature Center website to sign up and complete a volunteer waiver. Bring your water, gloves and plan to enjoy fellowship with your club members!
