There is no regular Rotary Friday morning meeting this week, but there's plenty of opportunity to see your Rotary friends and help welcome the GRSP Class of 2019-20 to Atlanta for our annual GRSP Leadership Conference. The Rotary Club of Dunwoody has been involved in this leadership weekend for at least the last 15 years. Fred and Kathy Brandt were our original weekend leaders, and Scott Jennings, Harvey Rosenzweig and Mike Parks have all served as our weekend chairs. For the last few years, Louise Barden and her team have been hard at work to create a great agenda and coordinate logistics for the weekend.
Students will be visiting the Atlanta History Center and participating in escape room fun on Friday. On Saturday, they'll participate in a variety of workshops and a service project where they'll assemble water filters. And, on Sunday morning, they'll participate in a Shark Tank competition - developing a service project idea.
This year, we have a total of 17 host families - 12 from Dunwoody, two each from North Atlanta and Buckhead, and one from the Gainesville Rotary Club. The Rotary Club of Metro Atlanta and the Rotaract Club of Atlanta will be helping with various parts of the weekend. Saturday night, we'll be hosting group suppers at three Rotarians' homes - Jennie Stipick, Carter Stout and Jackie Cuthbert.
Thanks to all of you who have been part of that and those who have agreed to help with parts of the weekend or host students. It's not to late to be part of the weekend - check in with Louise on volunteer opportunities! And feel free to drop by for part of the weekend, especially the events at Oglethorpe all day Saturday and Sunday morning. You can view the agenda so you'll know where we'll be.
Join President Cathie and your Rotary friends this Thursday night at 5:30 pm. We're back at Marlow's Tavern in Dunwoody Village for our monthly Thirsty Thursday celebration! And bring a friend who might be interested in Rotary or family members!
As we discussed at last Friday's meeting, we have a unique opportunity for the club and individual Rotarians to help bring an important crime-fighting capability to the Dunwoody Police Force. The Rotary Club of Dunwoody plans to make a donation to the Dunwoody Police Foundation in support of the launch of the K-9 unit for the Dunwoody Police Department. This donation will help expedite the launch of this important crime-fighting capability for the Dunwoody Police Department. Funding will help acquire and train two K-9s and prepare of two officers who will be trained as K-9 handlers. Individual Rotarians who wish to support this cause may write checks to the Dunwoody Rotary Charitable Fund, memo“DPD K-9”. The first $5,000 in individual donations will be matched by the Dunwoody Rotary Charitable Fund, increasing the Rotary Club’s total donation amount and doubling the value of the individual’s donation. Thanks to the generosity of Northside Hospital, we have a great opportunity to raise up to $12,500 through this year's Governor's Ball raffle. We are offering private box seats at State Farm Arena for the Harry Styles concert on July 29 - including food and parking passes. Harry Edward Styles is a 25-year old British singer, songwriter and actor with a net worth estimated at $85 million in 2018. His second album - Fine Line - released in 2019 broke record as the biggest sales debut from an English male artist in the US.
We will only be selling 500 tickets - at $25/ticket - and participants will have a chance to win one of three prizes - the first two for four tickets each and the third for two tickets. To achieve our goal of $12,500, we need your help in buying tickets and promoting raffle ticket sales to your friends and coworkers. It's easy to purchase tickets - anyone can go to dunwoodyrotary.org/lottery/3
